The Mentoring Partnership Program matches new immigrants in Toronto, Peel and York with mentors who share the same profession. By providing advice and insight Mentors can help new immigrants to begin to understand the Canadian Workplace.

What is a Mentee?

A newcomer to Canada who is:

  • Living in Canada for 3 years or less
  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • Highly fluent in English
  • Unemployed or working in a "survival job" 20 hours or less a week
  • Achieved a minimum bachelor degree or equivalent
  • Have at least three years of international work experience in their area of expertise 
  • Job ready by completing an employment preparation program
  • Committed to 6 hours a month for 4 months
  • Actively job searching independently

What is a Mentor?

Mentors have a combination of knowledge and business experience to bring wisdom as a guide to a learning process. Mentors have established themselves in their current roles and have a reputation for developing others.

  • Share insight on Canadian work values and culture
  • Provide access to professional networks
  • Provide feedback on preparing for interviews and meetings
  • Share information on current workplace and industry trends


  • Knowledge of sector specific Canadian workplace culture
  • Skills required to meet market demands
  • Guidance through the licensing and accreditation process
  • Improve professional terminology
  • Self-marketing techniques and confidence building
  • Availability of resources for upgrading skills
  • Awareness of publications and workshops on recent development in their field
  • Information on local industries and potential employers
  • Professional networks
  • Employment or job training placement opportunities
